Linus was in his seventh year now. He had the choice of whether to give up Herbology in his sixth year and he had chosen to continue taking it. What was wrong with him? Yes, he did pass his Herbology, but what exactly did it have to do with his future occupation of being the owner of The Leaky Cauldron? Well, he might need to identify plants and make sure he didn’t buy poisonous ones so that all his customers died. That was the one of the reasons. The real reason, as Linus knew deep down, was that he didn’t want to disappoint his father. He was the only son. He did have a sister. His parents had decided not to go the Weasley route and have seven children. One sister was enough. Linus would be clueless as to how he could deal with six siblings if he was the eldest. While his father didn’t insist Linus take up Herbology, he knew his father was glad when he continued. There were some days Linus wished he had not taken it up.
Today was one of those days. Linus looked like he had been rolling around in the mud. The plants they were harvesting struggled like crazy when he tried to transfer them from one pot to another. Linus was pretty sure he tasted dirt today. He did not ever want to taste dirt again. After talking to his father for a few minutes, Linus left the greenhouses. He trudged back to the castle, attempting to recall the cleaning spell that his mother always used when he got his clothes dirty. He ended up splashing himself with water and then drying himself. Which didn’t help much, if he was to be honest.
Since he was not drunk, his sense of balance was much better and Linus didn't trip over his own feet as he made his way back to the castle. He admired the trees, the students who caught his eye, and wished for winter to come soon. Linus liked winter solely for the fact that he could get into snowball fights with just about anyone and win. Oh, and Christmas. When he got presents and gave them as well. Linus neared the entrance hall just as a group of students rushed out of it. Linus barely got out of the way as he eyed all of them as they passed him. Was there a fire that he didn't know about? But his nose soon picked up a familiar smell. So it wasn't a fire. It was a dungbomb. As if he needed to smell and look horrible.

The light from the sun shone through the window panes as Catherine walked down the crowded corridor. Her heels clicked against the stone pavement, her small curls bouncing with every step. Her school uniform was crisp and clean and she wore a thigh-length skirt accompanied with tights and healed black mary jane shoes. Her delicate outfit, hair and make up were all put together with careful persicion, like any other day. She took great care in her appearance, especially in the beginning of the year, she had to make an impression on all the new and returning students.
Besides for a few classes, she had nothing planned today and decided a walk through the castle might be entertaining. She looked down at the students passing by with her luminous green eyes but said nothing. Most of the time Catherine enjoyed the company of her Slythrien friends, although her mood leaned more toward solitary at the moment so she decided not to try and find Sterling or Lucy. Even though she didn’t have an idea of where she was heading, Catherine walked with purpose. She didn’t want the other students to think she was slacking or friendless. As she walked, she passed the Great Hall and slowed her gait.
She remembered the first time she stepped foot into the large hall. She was nervous but she concealed her anxiety. As soon as the hat had touched down on her head, it shouted “Slythrien!” And the Slythrien table had exploded with cheers. It was a fond memory, but one she wouldn’t want to relive. After a couple minuets of walking, Catherine reached the entrance hall.
She kept walking but noticed a mischievous group of Gryffindors huddled in the corner, snickering and giggling. Before she knew it, there was a small explosion and the hall was filled with a horrible smell. Catherine gagged and turned to leave the entrance hall, awkwardly bumping into a Hufflepuff covered in dirt. She pulled away from him with a look of disgust on her face; Linus Longbottom. Now dirt was smeared all over Catherin’s front and she was furious.
”Linus!” She said dangerous, poison in her words. “Would you mind explaining why you’re covered in dirt?. She was never a fan of Linus Longbottom, she always found him too loud and annoying. She never acted on her dislike for Linus, but at the moment (with dirt smeared all over her white blouse) she couldn’t help but express her annoyance.

Amidst all the chaos, Linus managed to crash into someone. Perhaps crashing was too much of an exaggeration. They didn't fall on top of each other with their lips nearly pressed against each other. It was a mere bump. Of course, he was covered in dirt and now the other person was too. She didn't seem too happy. He didn't think anyone would be. Though he did stare at her when she demanded to know why he was covered with dirt. “Catherine! Very nice to see you too. I haven't seen you since school started. Well, I've seen you. Not talked to you.”
He looked down at himself, before sighing theatrically. “Herbology. Unlike my sister and dear father, I have no talent in it and am reduced to helping my father so I can get some extra credit.” Linus told her. “Did you continue with Herbology?” Linus asked. “There's still time to drop out if you're afraid to get dirty.” Linus said. “Sorry about your blouse. I can't seem to recall the cleaning spell. Can you?” The Hufflepuff continued with his various ramblings and questions for a couple of minutes.
He had no issues talking to Slytherins, even ones that disliked him. But Catherine didn't seem to dislike him. Right now though, she might just hate him a little. Ah well. It probably was nothing that she wouldn't get over. “So, a dungbomb. Did you know who set it off? Maybe we can throw some back at them.” He grinned at Catherine. Linus just liked the thought of pranking someone. His pranks weren't all that sophisticated or even smart, but they got the job done.

Catherine gritted her teeth together. She could not contain her annoyance with the annoying Hufflepuff. Although he didn’t seem to notice how angry she really was. As soon as he opened his mouth she instantly regretted saying anything to Linus; she should have turned and walked the other direction as soon as she collided with him. If she wasn’t careful, Linus would talk her ear off (and then some). It was a shame that his big mouth put his good looks to shame, not that she’d ever be caught snogging with a Hufflepuff, that is.
”No, I don’t like to play in the dirt like you Longbottoms,” She spat. He was lucky she didn’t demand payment for the cost of the blouse; of course it could be fixed with a simple cleaning spell. She could recall the spell either, but once she got to her dorm she could look it up. She’d still shower and change, just to be sure. If there was anything Catherine wasn’t, it was Dirty. The only time she allowed herself to get messy was when she was playing Quidditch. She was a dedicated player and captain, although outside of the pitch she rarely mentioned the subject.
Catherine wrinkled her nose in disgust, a prank? He was more childish than she looked. Her temper had simmered a little, but she was still furious. She’d have to walk all the way back to her dorm, smelling and covered in dirt. Even if she hadn’t bumped into Linus she’d still have a horrible stench, why must he add insult to injury? She didn’t care what the other students thought that much, but she still had a reputation. ”Or you could throw some at yourself and save the trouble”, Catherine said with a fake smile. ”If you’re no good at herbology, why’d you take it again?” Catherine asked, immediately regretting it. She prepared herself for another tidal wave of Longbottom’s incessant chatter.

“Ouch.” Linus said, in response to her comment. She was most definitely mad. The tone of her voice didn't sit too well with him, but Linus wasn't about to call her out on that. “Playing in dirt, as you so put it, pays the bill for my family.” He decided not to add on any more ramblings. It was hard, but he managed it. There were a list of careers that he could list that played with dirt. Cursebreakers, for example. Sure, they didn't exactly play with dirt, but Linus always had the image that Cursebreakers got covered in dust when they recovered ancient treasures.
It seemed Catherine didn't fancy the idea of him pranking. “I'll have you know, I've not set off a dungbomb accidentally.” Linus quipped, smiling back at her. “Eh.” The Hufflepuff hesitated a while. Most people figured that he took the subject to make his father happy. And it was true. He hadn't had to entertain the direct question of why he took it. “To make my father happy.” He replied, shrugging. “I figured I could deal with it for two more years. He's good at it. Cassie is super brilliant at it. She can rattle off the names of plants that I have no idea existed. Oh, and all their uses too. I'm following more in my mother's footsteps.” Linus told her.
He took out his wand, and performed a spell that he'd seen his mother do. It produced a scent, mostly flowery, that masked any nasty smell in the house. A puff of purple mist sprayed out from his wand and Linus sniffed at it. “Hmm. Lavender. Want some perfume to mask the horrible smell of this dungbomb?” It wasn't too bad a scent, Linus thought. He didn't have any more lessons, which was why he wasn't too upset that he was all dirty. But girls. Girls and dirt were a different sort of thing all together.

Her nose wrinkled as she accidently smelt the foul stench the held the entrance hall. This day had gone from having potential to being covered in dirt and smelling like an animal’s waste bin. She raised an eyebrow as she listened to Linus talk. He smiled at Catherine, catching her off guard. She knew that he could tell she was mad, but he was still friendly. It puzzled Catherine but she came to the conclusion that some people are densely friendly no matter what the circumstance. Her temper had almost settled although her annoyance with the Longbottom stayed the same.
”I see,” she said in response to Linus’ explanation. As much as his presence annoyed him she still couldn’t help but find him charming in an endearing manner. He wasn’t her usual type but still felt a strange attraction to him. The Lavender aroma entered her nostrils and she breathed the pleasant smell in. “That actually smells really good.” Maybe the Longbottom had some uses after all. “I would, thank you.” Her tone shifted from furious to fascinated with the smell that had originated out of Linus’ wand.

Linus was not a fan of angry people. They said horrible things and Linus believed that they meant it, despite what they might say later. And his counter to that was to make them laugh. Or at least smile. Or if he failed in that, to make them less angry. Catherine seemed to not be as angry as he first was, so Linus considered this to be a situation he had turned around slightly.
The Hufflepuff grinned when she complimented the scent. “My mother always uses this spell. Of course, she can conjure up different scents while I'm stuck with this. And an occasional Jasmine scent.” Linus said, making a small perfume bottle appear out of thin air. He filled the bottle with the perfume and handed it over to Catherine. “There you go. My little gift to you. One of a kind, unless of course, someone else uses the same spell.” He shrugged.
“Now, where were you heading before all that nasty business happened?” He asked. “How has school been treating you? I would ask about Quidditch, but that might not be ideal since we're on opposing teams. Plus, your seeker scares the crap out of me.” Linus continued talking. So he wasn't quite so terrified of the Slytherin seeker, but it helped to let her think so. Plus, he was built like a twig and Dawlish was a beefcake.

”Jasmine is one of my favorite scents,” Catherine casually commented. Magical perfumes were one of her desired items; she enjoyed to smell nice as much as she enjoyed looking good. ”Thanks.” Catherine took the bottle from Linus and placed it in her bag. She hoped to get more of Longbottom’s scents in the future, although she wasn’t sure how much she’d be talking to him. Thankfully none of her other slytherin classmates were in the entrance hall to witness Catherine socializing with the Hufflepuff. The more she thought about it, the more she realized how little she knew about Linus. They were both seventh years and their time at Hogwarts was at its near end.
”Nowhere in particular and school is going great, like always.” Linus’ questions were annoying but sincere. Perhaps that’s why his friends tolerated him daily. He was a nuisance, but a genuine nuisance. As attractive and honest as he was, Catherine was too biased to find herself liking him. ”He is pretty brutish,” Catherine agreed. She’d rather not talk Quidditch outside of the pitch but occasionally she was in the mood. Graham Dawlish was an interesting character, he was a headache but he had his assets. She had been keeping an eye on the Slytherin but he was too blunt and wild for Catherine’s taste. ”So how are you? Catherine was merely returning the courtesy, she didn’t care too much about how Linus was doing but she decided to play along with the conversation.
