Members of the Quidditch team were to use to people whispering at them, pointing at them, and gossiping about who got hit where at the last practice session. But for James, this was different. He hadn't held the hand of another girl since that girl in the fifth year. James almost shuddered just thinking about her. Right now, he was holding hands with Charlotte. He hadn't realized the fact that they had been holding hands since he helped her up until he saw some second years stare with wide eyes before giggling, chattering at top speed. James gave a rueful smile. I doubt privacy is an option we'll find within the castle walls. Besides, this doesn't seem like the sort of conversation to be had in a musty classroom. He remembered the hidden route to the Black Lake, one of his absolute favorite places to pass time in. Down to the Great Hall, into a nearby passageaway where there was a statue you had to tickle at a particular place, and then say Dispersius. The route took them to the path outside of Hogwarts, from where it was an easy shot to the Black Lake. The air was cool, and James had whispered to her that they would talk at a more secluded place before starting the long journey to the laughing statue. More than hundred people had seen them along that way, and Charlotte had looked a little red even when they were barely outside the Common Room. James didn't dare look to see what color she would be by now. He led Charlotte to a tree under which they could sit, and which would prevent them from being seen by any stragglers from Hogsmeade. " Well, I really don't see how this would affect Quidditch. I too shared the same doubts at the start, but my judgement says you're not the type of person to get angry even if a presumed relationship came to an end. If you think I'm the same way, and if you yourself are interested in taking this a bit further, I don't really mind carrying on with this,"James said as he looked as the smooth, regular patterns in the water. Every time there was to be a duelling match, he would picture this: The regularity and the calmness. It helped him win every time.

Charlotte walked along with James. He lead her down the hallways, and through a passage way. When they exited the tunnel, they were near the lake. Charlotte wasn’t the biggest fan of the lake. She wasn’t the strongest swimmer, and swimming in lakes freaked her out.
“I just don’t want to ruin the dynamics of the team. We’ve been doing really well this school year. I’m a not huge fan of relationships. I’m not your typical girl,” Charlotte said, smiling softly.
“By ‘taking this a bit further’ what exactly do you mean? I’m pretty much open for anything, and everything. If you care, I’m not a virgin. So you shouldn't worry about deflowering me or anything.” Charlotte thought about how a friend like James would come in handy. Every human had basic needs, regardless of if they talked about them or not. This ‘relationship’ would be purely physical.
“So, purely physical? Nothing more, right? When we’re around other people, we’ll go back to normal friends. If you want, we could have a built in date in each other. Dates for Hogsmeade, balls, and other stupid function?” Charlotte figured sleeping around with one guy only would be better then sleeping around with every guy in Hogwarts. She wouldn’t have to worry about her reputation, or sexually transmitted infections.
“But, one thing I care strongly about is this has to be monogamous. I do not to get any sorts of STIs or STDs. Also, I don’t think we should tell a whole bunch of people about us. I just moved here, I don’t need my reputation complexly trashed,” Charlotte said, tossing stones into the lake.

While Charlotte was speaking, James was indulging in his favorite pastime: making stones skid across the water of the great lake. But he was also listening intently to everything Charlotte said. He smiled, one side of his mouth quirking down as he listened to everything she was saying. Charlotte was definitely a very outgoing person. The fact that he had to observed this about her meant that he had never paid enough attention before. It was almost like they were setting the conditions for a business agreement. James liked that, and he wondered what that made him. " This may just be the traumatic events of my fifth year speaking, but I'm not quite the usual guy either. And a physical relationship purely based on friendship would be a welcome change," he said. After all, there were only so many drunken encounters a teenager could hope to have in his lifetime. A sober relationship, even one such as this would be a change, to say the least. James perked up when he heard there was a built-in date function. " The date clause will certainly make life easier.Every time I invite someone to a party, it ends up with her trying to get into a long term relationship. I mean, it's a party, not a matchmaking session," he said all the while thinking This would have made any other girl slap me. But it is the truth after all. A long term relationship should develop over time, if at all. But, there was one thing here which would not work out. "You do realize that this will be impossible to hide from people? They've probably gotten us married already in their rumor spreading. What we can do is maintain that the relationship is casual, and toss the rest. It'll die down soon enough," James advised. He loved his Gryffindor housemates, but gossip was one of the few social entertainments that people here had on a regular basis. He couldn't even bring himself to blame them for doing it. Then he smiled mischievously. It was getting dark, and they would have to get back soon if they wanted to do damage control on the gossip. Also, too much of serious talks like these and James would chafe, trying to break away from them. " Right, I'm just about out of comebacks. Why don't we make out now?" He tried to say it with a straight face, but ended up laughing, as he waited for her response.

Friends, built in dates, and benefits? If at anytime you, or even myself, develops feelings for someone else, we stop. I don’t want to be the ‘other woman’. Hell, maybe we even need a signal. We could say that we need to polish our broomsticks or something,” Charlotte clarified. She didn’t want to sound redundant, but she knew if James and herself weren’t on the same page, it would come back to bite them in the ass.
“I never understood by teenagers think one date should equal a long term relationship.” Charlotte shook her head, while throwing more rocks into the water.
“What should we tell people? I vote we ignore the rumors, and just say we’re good friends? I’ll tell the girls that you’re my best guy friend. You can tell the boys that I’m your best female friend. Plain and simply.” Charlotte loved her friends, but sometimes the drama was insane. This is Hogwarts, not Gossip Girls. As much as gossip was bothersome, she knew it’d never stop. Hogwarts was built on gossip as much as it was built on stones and wood.
Right, I'm just about out of comebacks. Why don't we make out now?
Charlotte laughed out loud, looking at James. They were sitting side by side, legs crossed. Rolling her eyes, Charlotte moved so she was sitting on her knees. Before James could react, she swung one leg over James’s, so she was straddling him. Leaning in closer, she whispered “If you want to, we totally can.” |

James laughed along with Charlotte, but at least that line had put all that serious talk behind them. James was not meant to deal with so much seriousness, except in the case of Quidditch and dueling practice. But just to completely put an end to this conversation, he made one more effort at conversation. It was hard to talk though, when Charlotte was sitting across his legs. Nevertheless, James pulled himself together and took a shot at it. "Yes , Charlotte, all terms are favorable to me too. But don't you think we're stretching the Quidditch metaphors a little?" James asked teasingly, running a hand through her hair. It's rich texture made it almost impossible for him to keep his hands off it. He brought her face a little closer to his. "I doubt best friends are former over the evening, but I suppose we can say that we enjoy each other's company. In many senses, it is true after all," murmured before giving her a light peck on the lips. James desisted from going any further. It was still unclear who had started the whole thing, but he had already initiated a session with Charlotte once. It would be fun to see how she would fare, if left to her own devices. "Why don't you take the lead?" he asked her with a daring look. They would have to go back in a few minutes, the still darkening sky suggested that it was almost time for dinner.

Rose liked the outdoors. There was nothing more that she liked than spending her free period out here during autumn and spring. Winter was usually too cold for her. She still came out if the castle felt stuffy to her though. Right now, she was making her way back to the castle. It was nearly time for dinner and Rose felt that she could eat whatever the house elves had cooked tonight. It had been a long day. Rose had a full day of lessons, an hour for lunch and then it was back to lessons. To add to it all, she hadn't caught a glimpse of Scorpius. Not that her day needed a glimpse of him to be complete. Of course not.
As she walked past the lake, Rose caught sight of a pair of familiar faces. She looked at those faces nearly every week during Quidditch practise, it was hard to miss them. Plus, they were kissing. No, they'd stopped now. But Charlotte was on James. Rose smirked, before she made her way towards the couple. She hadn't heard any rumours about those two hooking up, but who knew? She was always behind on rumours. But she'd caught them in the act now. Oh, wouldn't she just love to tell Albus about this.
“Hello!” Rose said cheerily, as she came up towards them. “Are you two practicing a new move for Quidditch? Fancy sharing?” She asked, knowing full well that it wasn't any move for Quidditch. She was quite sure the grin on her face said it all. She smiled at James, wondering if he was going to get back at her for this. Oh well. At least she would have this bit of fun before her day ended.

Charlotte laughed, and rolled her eyes at James. Leaning closer to him, she kissed him softly. Settling into the kiss, Charlotte ran her fingers through James’s hair. After kissing him shortly one more time, she started to add more length to each kiss. After a few moments, Charlotte heard someone coming up behind them. Before she could move, Rose Weasley, Gryffindor’s Quidditch captain stood before them. Charlotte pulled away from James, but remained sitting on top of him.
“Are you two practicing a new move for Quidditch? Fancy sharing?”
Charlotte flushed slightly at Rose’s question. Looking up at her captain and friend, and said “Well, Rose, practice would imply we need to improve. I don’t know, but I think we’re fairly good already!” Charlotte started to worry about what other questions Rose would ask, and if she would tell people what she saw. Personally, Charlotte wasn’t keen on the whole school knowing the type of relationship she had with James, but she didn’t know how much James wanted to tell everyone. Charlotte looked at James, silently begging him to say something. |

James laughed as Charlotte rolled her eyes and settled back against the trunk of the tree as he enjoyed the feel of her lips against his. He sighed as she got deeper and deeper with each kiss, feeling her hands running through his hair. Just as he was about to kiss back with even greater intensity, he heard a slight rustling sound, and felt Charlotte pull away. Pouting slightly, he looked up to see Rose Weasley looking down at them with a cheeky grin. Well isn't this quite the turn of events, he thought as Rose asked them what they were doing. This was NOT the first time a member of the Weasley family had walked in on him kissing a woman. But two things were missing from the usual turn of events: One, both parties involved were sober. Two, the "other" party involved was a member of the Quidditch team. Once the initial shock had subsided, he chuckled as he heard Charlotte replying to Rose. But he could tell that Charlotte was shook up, and this feeling was confirmed when Charlotte gave him a fleetingly pleading look. A devilish idea began to form in James's mind. He was pretty close to Rose, what with the Potters and Weasleys getting together every single holiday. But Charlotte didn't know that. There was scope for some fun with this. He shot a quick grin at Rose and said ,"You heard the woman, does it look like we need practice?" he asked and quickly pecked Charlotte on the cheek. She must be hyper-ventilating by now he laughed to himself. Then, a little more seriously, he spoke to Rose again. "Giving that genius brain a little fresh air I see. Have you figured out all the secrets of the universe yet, or are you putting off your homework again?" he asked. It was a regular joke, and Rose was no doubt sick of it by now. He weighed his options, wondering whether or not to lift Charlotte off him. Then he decided against it. If she's going to tell Albus anyway, I might as well enjoy the moment to the fullest.

Rose could only grin when Charlotte answered her. The grin grew wider and a laugh escaped her lips when James finally found his tongue and spoke. “Hmm, I don't know. Actually, I didn't see it clearly enough. Maybe if you guys did it again?” Rose suggested. Rose didn't know about Charlotte, but finding James kissing a girl wasn't all that uncommon. It might be the first time she had seen him kissing someone, but she wasn't the first Weasley to do it. Plus, she was quite interested to hear them explain this. Were they in a relationship or were they just playing around? She didn't need broken hearts on her Quidditch team. She hadn't specifically forbade inter-team relationships, but she trusted people knew how it would affect the team.
The brunette stuck her tongue out at James. “The secrets of the universe are vast and never ending so no, I have not figured it all out. If I did, I wouldn't be here looking at you with a girl on your lap. No offense, Charlotte.” Rose said, winking at the girl. She remained standing, because once she was done with all of this, she would be leaving. “So as the Captain of the Quidditch team, I feel obliged to ask if you two are dating. Or are there rumours out there that I need to be aware of before I even ask that question?” She smiled. “I do promise I will leave once you reply. And I sincerely hope James will never walk in on me kissing someone.”

Feeling extremely uncomfortable, Charlotte quickly moved off James, and sat besides him. Charlotte knew that James and Rose were related, but she unaware of how close they were. Charlotte wondered how much of the truth Rose should know. She looked to James, and shrugged.
“We’re not dating,” She paused. “We’re friends, with benefits. Don’t worry, it’s not going to influence the team in any way. I’m sure there are already rumors about us, but those are fake. We’re just friends, and we like to get together and hook up.”
Charlotte looked away from Rose and James, and started throwing rocks into the lake again. She was nervous that Rose would forbade it, or worse, kick them off the team. Rose was the captain, she had to do what was best for the team. If for some reason this relationship turned sour, practice and games would be the most awkward thing ever. In the back of her mind, Charlotte knew that this was going to work out. She had a feeling everything would be fine with her and James.

[img src=" "] Rose was smiling harder and harder with each passing second. James almost rolled his eyes mentally. He knew that Albus would not go as far as to tell his parents, and a part of Hogwarts already knew, considering only half an hour had passed since someone had first seen it. "Are you sure you want to see it again, Ms.Genius?" he teased Rose as Charlotte got off him and replied yet again. James winced at the blunt way in which she put it, and shifted his position, crossing his legs and sitting up straight. "I wouldn't have quite used the term 'hook up', but that about sums it up. Both of us don't want very steady relationships, so this works out just fine. Trust your senior, Quidditch always comes first to him," James grinned. While they were in the same year, James was a year older, and had been riding a broom for longer. But Rose, with her brains and skills had been able to come up with excellent team play patterns. His seniority didn't really amount to anything now, but he never lost a chance to mention it. Another tradition he followed with her. James laughed and responded to Rose, "To be honest Rose, if you had figured out the secrets of the universe, you wouldn't have anything better to do than walk in on us. After all, you already know everything else, yeah?" he said and watched Charlotte throw rocks at the lake. Now she wasn't even trying to make them skid. Quidditch really is important to her I suppose he mulled to himself. "And Rose, what if I tell you I already have, if only for a fleeting second?"

She had made Charlotte uncomfortable. Ah, well. “Actually, no, I've changed my mind.” Rose replied James, sticking her tongue out. Rose knew all about friends with benefits. Maybe it was more one night stands with benefits. Things got messy with friends. “Ah.” Rose uttered, looking between James and Charlotte. She was with James on this one. Hook up sounded so... well, it certainly sounded like they were using each other for fun. Rose couldn't judge them on that. She wasn't going to.
“Oh, you're just a year older. Don't make it sound like it makes you smarter.” She told him, grinning right back at James. As if she didn't do that to her own brother. At his next comment, the brunette pouted at him. “I probably would find more creative ways to annoy you. Maybe get the squid to grab you two and dunk you in the pond. Ha!” Rose told him.
“Charlotte love, I'm not kicking you two off the team.” Rose assured her, as the other girl started throwing rocks into the lake. “Besides, if you two can't figure out your own issues, I'm going to personally sit you down and make the two of you talk. Not to mention I've trained the crap out of the two of you and getting new people just makes my job harder.” Rose said, smiling brightly as if that was exactly the reason why. She wouldn't care if she had to train two new people; she'd like James to be happy, as sappy as that sounded.
Rose raised an eyebrow at James. “Have you now? Who was the lucky bloke I was kissing? Was it Linus Longbottom? I'm always kissing him. He likes it.” Rose said. She ran through the names of boys she'd kissed and came up with a pretty substantial list. Graham, perhaps. They had been at that party and James was there as well. Not to mention Charlotte.

[img src=" "] James saw a curious look flash across Rose's face for a fraction of a second. Maybe she's feeling uncomfortable about the nature of our relationship he thought to himself. As far as he knew, Rose was the average girl when it came to relationships. She had been with her share of boys, but he wondered if this was within her experience. Then again, no matter the time they spent together, this was not a subject they usually ventured into. In any case, she was now talking about setting the giant squid on them. "Well let me assure you Rose, if you have actually managed to find a way to force the giant squid into following your whims, then you can replace Hagrid as the Care of Magical Creatures professor. Even he hasn't found a way yet," said James and stuck his tongue out at her. Cocky though he might have sounded, he wouldn't pass Rose to come up with squid pheromones potion. That would be...bad for the person who was covered in it. James unconsciously fingered the pendant in his pocket for a moment. In a way, he was relieved that the captain of the team was okay with it. Then again, he knew Rose well enough to at least guess that she would be fine with the relationship, considering both he and Charlotte were mature enough. He rubbed Charlotte's arm gently, knowing she had been far more afraid about the verdict. "Why thank you milady Captain. If anything, we will strive to keep our relationship off the field especially to avoid one of your talks." The general mass of chatter coming from the castle suggested that dinner time was upon them. James sighed and stood up, running a hand through his hair by force of habit. Enough people had warned him that he would go bald at this rate. "Well, unless any of us wants to get anorexic, it's time to head back in for some food. Too bad," he sighed dramatically, then carried on the tone as he whispered to Rose," No, some other Slytherin bloke. At least you stay away from the Malfoys like your dad said...or do you?"

I won’t let this influence quidditch in anyway. I’d never want to jeopardize the team. Besides, where else are you going to find a tiny Seeker who isn’t a second year? The only people who are shorter than five foot, three inches aren’t even old enough to be on the team!” Charlotte laughed softly, looking at Rose. Seekers are generally the smallest and lightest players on a team. The Seeker is also the most fouled player on the team. For the most part, only the Seeker could end a game, by catching the Golden Stitch.
“I second this dinner plan. I’m not terribly hungry, but I would love a drink of some sort. My throat is starting kill,” Charlotte knew she was coming down with a cold. It was unavoidable, she’d been playing Quidditch in the rain, and been outside in the wet London weather. She wasn’t used to this rainy weather, she was used to warm and sun.

It was quite true that James and her did not talk about relationships much. She did that with her girl friends and other female cousins, but James? Not so much. Rose chuckled at James' reply. “Imagine the possibilities of having the giant squid as a pet.” The brunette said, smiling at her cousin. Rose always wondered how long the squid had lived. Perhaps she needed to look up it up. She doubted that there were many giant squids living around the world.
“Yes, you do that, Potter.” She replied him, putting on her Captain tone. It was just a tad more authoritative than her normal voice. After all, she certainly wasn't going to get anything done by being flirty with all her team mates. Maybe the males, but since half of them were related to her, Rose doubted that that would work. “I'd hate to lecture you.” She winked at him, before replying to Charlotte. The other girl seemed more worried about Rose's decision. “That is very true, Charlotte. They'd get thrown off their broom the moment a bludger comes near them.”
Rose waited for both James and Charlotte to stand up, before she started walking back to the castle. “Fooood.” She dragged out the word, as if she was a zombie. “Should I sit together with you two and annoy you more?” Rose asked, before smiling. James whispered something to her and Rose glanced at him. “Malfoy's not a bad bloke.” She whispered back. “Besides, I think my father might yell at me for dating Slytherins alone, not just Malfoy.”
