HOW JAMES GOT THE MAP:
The map was passed down to Teddy Lupin by Harry. Teddy gave James the map after he passed out of Hogwarts. Now no one knows that James has the map, except Teddy. Not even Albus or Lily.
WHY JAMES DECIDED TO TELL OTHERS:
He wanted to have the same number of people as the original Marauders, since he thinks it would be fun. The matter just kept getting put off, since James never really had friends who were that deep. Now, in his seventh year, it was three parts trust in some of his friends and one part of desperation (as this was the final year) that drove him to share the map. He wants to make the map even better, and have some wild adventures in the last year. That's why he chose friends who wouldn't pass the chance to do something adventurous and exciting.
HIS ROLE IN THE GROUP:
He will most probably help increase the map's encryption, and make it even more secure. He can also help a little with some practical Trasnfiguration and Charms work. The fact that the other three Marauders are gorgeous females is a complete coincidence...really...
