September. The month always meant a fresh start and some freedom for Zara O’Riley. Away from the stress that the house and her family brought her and into the stress of school and Bert. At least the latter were things she wanted to deal. Especially Bert since they hadn’t seen each other over the summer. He had been held hostage or something along those lines and Zara had been fresh out of break out ideas and so had left him there. Plus, Scotland was not a place she enjoyed wandering around. It wasn’t Ireland.
The common room had been busy and Zara had not been in the mood to socialise much, preferring to settle in and enjoy the castle and so she had turned off and into the library. Sitting at a desk in an aisle she had her head down and was dozing slightly. The library, so she had found, was a fantastic place to have a nap. Unless it was exam time, then the common room was a fantastic place. She had pulled the hood of her Ireland Quidditch jersey up over her head as an obvious ‘Do not disturb’ sign and simply hoped that people would respect that. And if they didn’t. Well.

Bert wandered around the castle, Speckles happily on his shoulder and sometimes hopping ahead of him. He was whistling a tune as he went, it felt good to be back in Hogwarts again. After a summer of rarely ever being let out, and Speckles being kept in a cage, with a muzzle (what was his father thinking?) it was just nice to get away from all that. The Hufflepuff common room was empty, and Bert was getting bored of doing nothing and talking to no one. He needed to be in the company of people and fast, a bored Bert was never a good thing.
Bert knew that Zara would be the only one to cure his problem, and he was trying to find her. After looking on most of the floors of the castle, Bert came to the conclusion that Zara was either in her Common Room or the Library. And since he didn't have access to the Ravens Common Room, he decided to head to the library.
"Zara." he whispered as he went through the library. He already wasn't on the best of terms with the librarian. "Za! Za! Zaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" The whispers got louder as he went along. Bert finally found Za in her Ireland Quidditch jersey, he made a mental note to buy her a Scottish one. Speckles hopped onto the table and then Bert knelt down by Z's ear. "Zaaaaarrrraaa!"

In the silence she had taken to falling into a deep sleep at the desk. Traveling made her feel tired and the first night had been crappy with first years settling in and being loud in the dorms. The peace was not to last though. Her name was crystal clear and she woke with a start, making the chair wobble. In front of her face there was a toad that made her ‘eep’ in fright. “Bert!” Zara hissed turning to see her best friend.
“I am going to kill you.” she told him. Zara straightened up in her chair and took a quick glance around the library to make sure the librarians weren’t looking at them. The last thing either of them needed was being kicked out. She picked up Speckles and stroked him. “And how are you gorgeous? And you Bert?” Zara asked. With her foot she kicked out the chair next to her so that he could take a seat next to her. As much as she wanted to kill him for waking her up this was her best friend. Someone she had dearly missed all summer.
Zara carefully placed Speckles back down on the desk carefully. A toad was such an unusual pet and yet over the years she had found herself growing affectionate towards him. Sometimes preferring the creature over Bert.

Bert grinned to see Zara awake, slightly offended to the noise she had made upon seeing Speckles. Bert went wide eyed at the thought of Z killing him. "I'd rather you not kill me if I were honest." Z was one of the few people that understood everything that Bert said in his accent. Some people found it "hard to understand." Bert's views on those people were that they just didn't try hard enough.
He was glad though to see both Zara and Speckles bonding, they were two very important people in his life. Bert went to sit down before answering her question. "Bored! How are you?" Before Bert let Zara answer his question he started to speak again. "Let's go and do something! And not just anything, something big!" Bert shot up from his chair grinning.
He picked up Speckled and looked at Zara, he realised that he must have gotten a few odd stares as he yelled. But he wanted to do something more flamboyant, than just sitting in the library. He didn't have a certain thing in mind yet, but that didn't matter to him. He just wanted to do something productive.

“To be honest Bert, you don’t get a say in whether you’re the person who becomes me first kill. You woke me up. When we met, I set out the rules for you. You should learn to follow them.” Zara told him with a shrug. Midway through the first year she had set out rules, which included to never wake her if she was sleeping and there was no immediate danger around along with some other thing. Of course he had broken them through the years. He wore his kilts. He had lifted his kilt infront of her. He had set things on fire. The list went on, and yet he still lived. Bert had nothing to fear really.
Bored. Why was she not surprised by this. ”Well I was tired. Now...” Nevermind. Apparently it did not matter as Bert, in true Bert style, thundered on with what he was thinking. Her bright blue eyes followed him as he stood up and she shot up as well. “Sorry. Sorry.” Zara called to the librarian who was moving towards them. “We’re just on our way out.” Z caught Bert’s wrist and pulled him towards the door. “Can I remind you that we kind of need the library, can you try not to get us kicked out.”
Once outside she leaned against the wall and wrinkled her nose. “Right then Bertie. What is it exactly that you want to do?”

"Yay! No dead Bert." Dead Bert was something that he did not want to be. "I don't really know where Speckles would go either. Actually, you know what, Speckles would go to you!" He grinned at Z.
Bert reluctantly went with Zara, toad in tow. He sometimes wondered how he even managed to be a prefect with everything that he had managed to break, or how much he got in trouble. But either way, they couldn't really take it off of him now. And Bert quite liked the power he had.
Once outside Bert wondered what they actually could do. "Well you see, I didn't actually plan that far ahead...." He thought for a moment. "How about we go have a par-tay!" Bert tried out some of his funky dance, almost hurting himself in the process.

Speckles would go to her? Oh wonderful. She could barely cope with looking after herself and yet she had a pet owl. If she decided to kill Bert she’d have gained a toad as well. If that wasn’t an incentive to keep Bert alive she wasn’t sure what was.
“What do you expect me to do Bert? Keep a books worth of ideas of what we can do when you’re bored?” Zara snapped. If he was bored and wanted to do something he should at least have an idea of what. “Oh Merlin.” Bert was dancing. That was it. That was enough Bert intake for the day. In small doses he was manageable. Zara began to walk down the corridor away from him slowly. Maybe she would make it back to the common room before he could catch her.
