Personality:
Desmond has never lived in a normal society. Because of the nature of what his father did, he had to travel around the world, accompanying his father into the most remote of locations. His father is the only person with whom he had the opportunity to form a bond. He prefers to spend most of his time reading books on his own, discovering new things from his father’s travels that no book could teach him. Hogwarts is his least favourite place, as he is forced to learn at someone else’s pace, following a path set by someone else.
Desmond hates interacting with other students. He is not able to identify with the things they discuss, or the things they seemed to find interesting. He is excellent at all things that can be done practically, as that was the only way he had learned to survive till he had come to Hogwarts. He hates writing on concepts, as it never really mattered in the end. In the end, it only came down to whether or not one could do something, and the only way to find that out was to look at a procedure and follow it exactly.

General History:
Desmond’s mother had passed away at childbirth, and he had spent most of his childhood wandering the globe with his famous, eccentric father. Since his vocation was to travel to every single place, document rare and hitherto unheard of herbs, study their properties, and publish their uses, Desmond had been to a lot of harsh territory.
Until he was 10, his father had always taught him in his spare time, teaching him the basics of education. His father always carried a huge stack of books, literally a library, conveniently miniaturized and stored in one of the sections of their travel bag. As soon as Desmond was old enough to read properly, he would spend all his time poring over books on locations, creatures, plants and roots.
When he was 11, Desmond’s father took him to a muggle boarding school, as if to give him a choice about the kind of life he wanted to lead. Muggle, like his mother, or wizard, like his father. A fat, leering man had made him answer a sheet of questions. Desmond found it very boring, for it asked him extremely mundane things, without a hint of magic to them. The fat man had reappeared a few minutes later, then with a sickly smile on his face, saying Desmond had an IQ of 172. Desmond’s father had left him with the school after they promised to look after his expenses, as long as he performed well.
After a week, Desmond escaped. His father had found him in the nearby woods, surviving on stolen crisp packs. By unspoken consent, the matter was never referred to again, and Desmond continued to accompany his father as usual.
They had gone to Diagon Alley after a few months, as his father had to be present at the publishing of his latest book “On Equatorial Herbs and their Potency in Poisons and Solutions.” It was then that Desmond was given his first wand: dragon-heart string and silver pine wood. Desmond was delighted, for that was the sign for him to read books on spells, and brew his own potions; something he had only observed till now. He disregarded the prescribed order entirely, learning the most relevant spells for their travels, such as levitation, warming spells, and so on.
Despite the fact that he had observed his father not just making, but inventing new potions for eleven years, he still struggled when it came to actually doing the tasks. But once he got over his initial stumble, he progressed rapidly.
Desmond could see that his father was bringing up the subject of a proper education, and this displeased him. He knew that OWLs and NEWTs were the formal steps to be ‘recognized’ as a proper wizard. While he did give a gnome’s ass about proper protocol, he knew that his father had been extremely lenient with him until then.
So when his father managed to secure special permission for him attend Hogwarts from the fifth year, as long as he proved he had sufficien knowledge to do so, Desmond had gone to a friend of his father’s for coaching in Astronomy, History of Magic, and the more theoretical parts of Transfiguration. When Hogwarts approved of his entry, he prepared his trunk and left for the muggle train station in London, though not before warning his father that while he would not get himself expelled, he could make no other promises.
