WESLEY SILAS WHITBY
INTRODUCTION
Full name: Wesley Silas Whitby
Nickname(s): Wes
Age: Twenty-Four
Gender: Male
House: Gryffindor Alum
Occuption: Care of Magical Creatures professor
APPEARANCE
Play By: Ryan Gosling
Style: Very rarely is Wesley dress to the nines. Mostly he wears jeans and t-shirts, as his job allows for such informality. At feasts and other school functions, however, he cleans up nicely and will put on a vest and shirt, having a stylish simplicity about him. Most of his clothing is old, and all is second hand. He doesn’t spend money on things like that…he doesn’t really spend money at all.
Distinguishing Marks: Having worked with animals throughout Hogwarts and his new career, Wes had a great number of small, creature inflicted scars on his arms and legs. From working in construction, etc, while younger, he has a number of accidental scars about his body as well. He has no piercings or tattoos, not concerned at all with his own body image.
PERSONALITY
Likes: The outdoors, magical creatures, wood working, silence, swimming.
Dislikes: Alcohol, laziness, excessive luxury, arrogance, womanizers.
Boggart: Harm, in any form, to his sisters
Patronus: Lion
Strengths: Wise, dependable, handy.
Weaknesses: Irritable, closed-off, defensive.
Personality: Despite his outward appearance of an engaging personality, Wesley Whitby has one hell of a complicated life. Despite the pitfalls, bumps, and bruises of his childhood, he remains, as he always was, a very friendly, jovial person. Wes’s greatest pleasures in life come from the people around him, and there is nothing he loves more than good company, besides a good practical joke or prank. Most of the time, he subjects his students to these sorts of jokes, and they have gained him favor in the eyes of many, but loathing in the eyes of many as well.
Not materialistic or greedy, Wes lives a simplistic lifestyle. He doesn’t need much to be happy, only the love of his friends. He is quite handy, and is an avid outdoorsman as well as craftsman. He can make for himself what is not provided, and what he cannot make, he does without. More important than providing for himself, however, is providing for his three younger sisters. With both parents relatively absent during Wes’s childhood, he, the oldest child, learned how to be the patriarch of a family in need. Sacrifice is daily, and he is used to it, happy to give for the love he receives in return. To Wes, family is everything.
Despite being young, Wes grew up very quickly, and is beyond his years in wit and wiseness. There is nothing more important to him than family, and that is something that everyone must understand to completely understand him. He is a very outwardly friendly individual, but he doesn’t let anyone under the surface, even his closest friends. Attempting to figure him out will only make him angry, and he can be set off quickly in that regard.
Not all is pleasant,. There are many triggers that spark a nerve in Wes. When this happens, he becomes irritable, defiant, and prone to erratic behavior. These include, but are not limited to, mistreatment of females (especially his sisters), reminders of his mother, letters from his father, and other reminders of past, regrettable times in his life.
BIOGRAPHY
Father: Kevin Whitby
Mother: Eloise Midgeon
Siblings: Three younger sisters in Hufflepuff (6th, 5th, & 4th)
Pets: Numerous magical creatures
Other Important People: Violetta Shacklebolt, current fiancé
General History: Kevin Whitby married Eloise Midgeon, but he certainly didn’t love her. It was more out of necessity than anything, because he couldn’t just leave her alone and pregnant. He wasn’t the definition of a caring husband or loving father, and Eloise was left much to her own devices when her son was born as far as caretaking went. Kevin selfishly named the child after his father and grandfather, Wesley Silas, despite being relatively absent in the child’s life. For a long time, the child was the only offspring of the pair, but three sisters followed eventually, and they would become some of few comforts in Eloise’s life.
Not being especially intelligent or skilled, there was very little in the world that Eloise could make a career out of. Her full time job became caring for her three small children, while Kevin worked a full time job for minimum wage. The family was never well off, usually struggling to pay that month’s bill for food and shelter. It was a tough existence and upbringing, especially for the children. What was worse, their father cured his sorrows by taking to his poisons, and he fell into a dangerous pattern of alcohol abuse, depleting even more funds. Kevin’s drunken nights could quickly take even worse turns, manifesting themselves into violence.
Wesley, or Wes, from an early age, felt a great deal of responsibility towards his mother and younger sisters. He alone became unafraid of standing up to his father. Even at the age of ten, he was finding hidden bottles of vodka and pouring them down the sink, or sheltering his sisters when he heard his father coming home. He would work odd jobs around his neighborhood to make some extra money for his mother, devoting the rest of his time to his sisters.
One of the most difficult things about this lifestyle was trying to keep it hidden from those around them. The Whitbys didn’t really have family friends, save for one family, and they wouldn’t have been friends had they not been the Whitbys’ next door neighbors. The Shacklebolts were a nice family, with well-rounded children and two model parents. The Whitbys simply rotted in comparison to the pristine political family they represented. The children were friends; he and Tony got along alright, and he always held a special place in his heart for Violetta. But Wes made a point of keeping the Shacklebolts away from his parents and household. To this day, his family life is still much shrouded in mystery to the Shacklebolts. But one can’t mute the yelling and bruises, so surely, they drew some of their own conclusions.
Leaving for Hogwarts was one of the most difficult decisions Wes ever had to make. He struggled between educating himself for his family’s betterment and leaving them to fend for themselves, or staying with them and losing an opportunity to help them further. His mother gave him no choice in the matter, demanding that he do what was best for him. His first few years away were extremely difficult and often frightening, and he was a recluse. His time not spent on his studies was spent in the owlery, feverishly writing letters to his mother and sisters, inquiring to their health and happiness. He often visited home, as well.
By the time his sisters were getting a little older, some of Wes’s fears were put to rest. He found it easier to focus on his studies and engage in a social life. Being a very genuine, friendly person, Wes made friends easily. He enjoyed being able to be happy and upbeat at school, because summers were full of full time work. Wes became known for his love of small pranks, and his tendency to swim laps in the lake. He spread his appreciation of the wizarding band The Weird Sisters to many, and even took to making full course meals in the Hogwarts kitchens for groups of friends.
As soon as Wes left school, he immediately moved back home and worked. He had developed into an extremely handy young man, and made his money doing odd jobs, house repairs, and construction for muggle neighbors and friends (with a little help from some subtle magic, of course). It was certainly a difficult arrangement, as he and his father were barely on speaking terms. They were at a tense stalemate. Kevin wouldn’t dare lash out at his wife and daughters when Wes was home, because his son had no reservations in physically subduing him. Every so often, Kevin would come home drunk and make a scene. The result was always yelling, crying from his mother, and a lot of blood coming from Kevin’s face and Wes’s fist. At all costs, Wes would order his sisters and mother out before anything really took place. He refused to let them see that sort of thing- hearing it was hard enough.
Once all three of his sisters were in Hogwarts, Wes had more time alone with his mother. The pair were always close, even if in a surreal way that few understood. She was meek and mild and frightened, and he had always been her protector. In the few years after his sisters were at Hogwarts, he convinced his mother to leave his father. Kevin was a burn out, an addict, and a violent individual. Eloise never found the strength to stand up to him- but Wes did. They packed up and left, and Wes bought a tiny cottage in Tinworth just big enough for himself, his mother, and his sisters.
Things got much better after that, but life was still tough, but in different ways. Eloise, scarred from her previous life with Kevin, never found the courage to leave the house, and she was incapable of finding or keeping a job. Wes no longer could keep up his odd-job lifestyle and he knew it was time to find full time work. It was a mere happenstance that he heard about an opening at Hogwarts. The long-time Care of Magical Creatures professor, Hagrid, had finally decided to retire. Wes jumped at the opportunity. The subject had always been his best and favorite, he knew the forest inside and out. One of Hagrid’s favorite students, he came with a high recommendation, and got the job.
At Hogwarts, he is able to look after his sister, and he is fed and houses. All of his income goes directly to his mother and sisters. He is as much a father to them as a son and brother, and he is trying his best to patch up everything with their broken life. So far, he is succeeding, but there is a long road ahead.
With all this going on in his life, Wes rarely had time for romance. He never dated when he was in Hogwarts, and he only truly started breaking out of that shell a couple years ago. But a lovely lady caught his eye, and after a year of steady dating, he proposed. Well, that’s not exactly how it went. She continually tried to bring up the subject, and he saw no reason not to, so he did. In reality, he is really quite apprehensive about the entire thing, as marriage is not something that can truly bring happiness to people, in his experience.
