Thaddeus looked at his Transfiguration book. Now, he liked Transfiguration. He adored the subject. But it was so bloody difficult to become an animagus. And who knew what sort of animal he would become? What if he became a mouse? What good were mice? Well, they could get into small places and spy on people. He supposed that was a good point to be made in their favour. But still, the Slytherin shut his Transfiguration book in frustration. He caused a noise in the silent library but Thad was not in the mood to apologise or even look apologetic that he disturbed the peace of others.
He knew he was mad and upset when even Transfiguration couldn't cheer him up. But Thaddeus persisted in trying to get his mind off a particular female as he rolled a piece of parchment out on the table. A Potions essay. He was nearly halfway done for this. He could very well finish it during this free hour he had before Charms. That is, if his mind didn't keep wondering to Skylar. His quill scratched the surface of his parchment repeated as he wrote. He usually could retain some information when he was doing his homework. But after a few minutes, Thaddeus threw his quill back into the inkwell.
Skylar was just one girl. Why couldn't he get her out of his mind? It wasn't as if he couldn't find himself another girlfriend. Of course he could. He'd go up to some of the girls who had caught his eye this week and ask them out on a date. They would agree. There wouldn't be a need for him to be constantly trying to push her out of his mind if he had another girl beside him. Right? No. That didn't work at all. Thaddeus tried that over the summer, and to his dismay, he thought about the brunette who cheated on him when he was with another girl. He scowled, before picking his quill back up.

this is it boys, this is war why don’t we break the rules already [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,10,true][atrb=style,background-image: url('http://i53.tinypic.com/wb98wn.jpg');,true] WHAT DO I STAND FOR ?
There was a very good chance that Skylar would bite clean through her lower lip. It was a bad habit that had developed early in her childhood, and she’d never been able to quit it. Anytime she was really thinking, or indecisive, her upper lip wrapped over part of its pair, and her teeth sank into the pink flesh, sometimes nibbling slightly. She had her quill in her hand and her textbook and notebook were open in front of her, but she couldn’t be bothered to look down at them. Even though she was poised to be taking notes, her head was snapped up and looking forwards at the back of the head of a very familiar Slytherin, who she had been staring at for a solid ten minutes.
She wasn’t quite sure what to do, which is why she was deep in thought and frozen to the spot. She didn’t want to move and try to exit the library, because the singular exit was directly in her line of view, and Thad was intersecting it. Surely, he’d see her exiting, and for some reason that made her uncomfortable. Did she want to go talk to him? Well, of course she did. The question was more: did he want to talk to her? Normally, Skylar would have no problem stomping up to someone and starting a conversation, but everything surrounding Thad and their relationship made her very antsy in a totally unorthodox and uncomfortable way. That was enough to freak her out, without all of the turmoil that had started to build up around them.
She didn’t want to have to admit to cheating on him, but it had happened. There was nothing she could do about it now. She made it her policy not to regret, but how could she not regret the action that made her entire relationship fall apart?! It had only been for a minute, one single heated minute in the secret passageway on the sixth floor. The two had been talking more and more often, and she was smitten. Not in a love way, in a way that made the bottom of her stomach do flip turns and her eyelids flutter. He was like a poison that had infected her mind. And there she was and he appeared and there wasn’t talking but only the air between them that so quickly disappeared. She was swallowed by his scent, and it was only one minute before she realized what she was doing. It was no excuse, but it had happened, and she was in this mess. Guilty as charged.
Taking in a deep breath, she stood up slowly, dropping her quill on her notebook and shutting it absent-mindedly. Leaving her things at her table, she made her way towards Thad, feet silent as they touched the floor. Still, people around them began to notice her slow approach. A slight hush and buzz swept the library- her infidelity and current situation weren’t exactly under wraps. This was Hogwarts, after all. She passed directly by him, trying not to turn her head, or lunge at him and hug him, but rather she pulled out the chair across from him and sat in it, looking at him with an uncomfortably blank face, one that could only read of regret, fear, and an attempt to smile. “Hi,” she whispered, barely audible in the quiet library.

He wrote some more words on his parchment, but it seemed that his mind was not allowing him to focus on this essay anymore. It was just one kiss. He should be able to see past that. Except, a kiss always led to something more. Plus, he certainly didn't want his girlfriend going around kissing other boys. Or maybe he should put it down to her being a Gryffindor. Merlin knew there were enough bad blood between the houses. But it was a new era, one that didn't seem to warrant a house rivalry as bad as the one a few decades ago.
No, it wasn't because she was a Gryffindor. Thaddeus decided. Then again, perhaps it was. How many times had the word reckless been used to describe them? Thad sighed silently, He'd caught glimpses of her since school had started. There were rumours flying about that she had been dumped. For a brief moment, Thad had been pleased. Pleased that she'd been hurt like he had been. But then he saw her looking absolutely miserable and he had to resist the urge to wrap her in a tight hug and tell her everything was going to be alright. Was everything going to be alright? He didn't know.
Everything certainly wasn't alright now. His eyes, which had been fixed on the parchment, left it and looked up when he felt a change in the atmosphere. There were an increased amount of whispers and Thaddeus soon saw the reason. Skylar was pulling out a chair at his table. Thad looked at her, finding himself frozen to the spot. She managed to greet him, to utter out a single word. Thad couldn't do that. He couldn't bring himself to talk or smile at the girl who made him feel like he wasn't good enough for her. That she had to resort to finding someone else.
Instead, he began packing his things up. Or rather, he picked up his bag and swept everything into it. “Bye.” Thaddeus replied her. Unlike Skylar's soft greeting, his farewell word was loud enough to be heard. His tone wasn't pleasant and the look he gave her was most definitely not a kind one. He supposed he would give her a chance to explain herself eventually, but today didn't seem to be the day. He picked up the inkwell and stood up, pushing his chair away noisily and headed towards the door.

There was a linger silence between them that seemed to be alive, in some sense. It was overly present, and it seemed that everything around them had been put on mute, when really a hush had spread over the library because all the students were realizing what was happening between them. They were all waiting for something to happen, a showdown or a dramatic kiss of forgiveness, but Skylar was waiting for Thad to respond, and that was the only thing on her mind at the moment, the only thing she wanted to be on her mind.
His answer cut through her life a double edged sword. Not only was it hurtful and dismissive, but the fact that it was so opposite from her hello made it seem cynical and derogatory. He grabbed his things and got up so quickly, and she thought he would at least follow up with a sentence or two…something, anything she could respond to. Yes, she was definitely expecting a lot from him there, to get their argument voiced out loud and talked out. She needed to take the responsibility for herself. She needed to start the conversation that she so often started for other people for them.
She jumped up and ran after him, and was uncomfortably aware of how the library burst back into nervous excitement with its sudden continuation of whispers. Thankfully, she caught up to him just as he walked through the door. She reached up one of her hands and secured it lightly on his shoulder. “Thad, wait!” There was a very unflattering tone of desperation in her voice, one she would have scoffed at had it been someone else. “Don’t go! Please.”
She relinquished her hand, nervous to have him shake it off forcefully. She was a tough girl who wasn’t afraid of much, but she was afraid of losing him, and she needed to proceed carefully. What could she say. “I-I…” The typical apology seemed so cliché and pointless, what was she going to do about it? “I miss you. she said first, trying to think of something that would get him to stay put and have a conversation with her. But what did she really want to say? Too much, almost. “I miss you so much.” she finally said, her voice cracking on the last word. Her face was uncharacteristically macabre, when usually it was simply put together and nonchalant. She hoped he recognized the agony the entre situation had caused and would continue to cause her. She wanted to fix it…all of it.

Thaddeus was never one to bother about what people thought about him. The whispers had stopped, and he was sure that was because they were waiting to see what would happen. Thad was also not fond of surprises. The surprise that Skylar had flung on him was not welcome. This one and the past included. He didn't stop to see her response. He didn't stop to see if he had hurt her or if she was about ready to cry.
She did manage to catch up with him. But Thad wasn't walking very fast. It might seem he wasn't hasty to be as far from her as he possibly could. He felt her hand on his shoulder, her touch. Her voice, the tone of it Her asking him not to leave. Before he could get her hand off him, Skylar had removed it. He spun around, stopping in his tracks. So, did she want to apologise? He'd let her do it. He crossed his arms, waiting for her to speak again. When she did speak, she started off by stuttering.
This was the closest he had been to her since their break up. Where he'd yelled at her. That didn't please him. He didn't like to yell and he most certainly didn't like to yell in a public area where every word he said could be heard. I miss you. Thaddeus glanced at her face, trying to figure out where she was coming from. “That's not an apology.” Those were the first words from him. He refused to acknowledge her words, that she missed him. “I would accept an apology. But forgiving you, that's another matter. You should know that, before you try to do whatever it is you wanted to do.” The expression that was on her face did not go unnoticed by him. It wasn't like her. “What is it that you thought you could do? Apologise and things would go back to normal? Imagine if I kissed some other girl and apologised. It was just a kiss right?” Thad asked, almost mockingly.

His words were crushing. Yes, she supposed she should have immediately apologized, but how would that sound? What good were the cliché words ‘I’m sorry’ in a situation like this? She could feel her reserve crashing around about her ears all the way down to her ankles, and she was shaking. Shaking. All of this, this inability to keep herself contained, was so uncharacteristic of her, and it disgusted her. But she couldn’t linger on how it made her feel. The only thing she could think about was how he must be feeling, how she made him feeling this way. There was nothing like knowing that something was completely and totally your fault. But this wasn’t some simple mistake. This was Thad. And that meant something much more.
“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!” she said, on the verge of very explosive tears. She had always been radical in most respects, and investing herself in things so deeply was no exception. Emotional control was definitely not a strong suite of Skylar’s. Again, especially when it came to Thad. There was something about him that made her unable to keep control. “It was just a kiss!” she nearly screamed, tears breaking free from her eyelids, streaming freely down her piqued cheeks. It was horridly embarrassing, and she had no idea what to do, what to say. She knew she had to say something. Even though she managed out words, they were many broken and hard to understand through her uncontrollable sobs.
“I don’t know what to say because I’m sorry will never be good enough! I let myself give in to something I didn’t really want but I thought I did, and I ruined everything! Everything! And I never want to hurt you ever again. I couldn’t live with myself if I did.” She was overwhelming herself, and surely overwhelming everyone around her, spilling herself out in the most unattractive and embarrassing of ways. “Because, I…I…” She couldn’t bring herself to finish the sentence. It would be forced and out of place and seemingly desperate. But it was resonating in her now. Even though she couldn’t say it, for fear of it being ruined, it was true.

Thaddeus wished she’d never come up to him. Why hadn’t she tried to make it up with the other guy? Why come back to him? Why put herself through this all over again? For as soon as she said she was sorry, Thad knew that she was going to cry. The tone of her voice, her body language and his words. Oh, his words. For a day after they broke up, Thad had refused to go to class. He found a nice place in the kitchens, asked for plenty of Firewhiskey and drank himself to death. Well, until he felt like puking it all out. He probably did. Then he made his way back to his dorm and slept. The next morning, he woke up and continued with his life. To be simply cliché, Thad died a little inside every time he saw Skylar with the other boy.
And yet here she was, telling him she was sorry. That it was just a kiss. That it was something she didn’t want but thought she did. That she didn’t mean to hurt him and she never wanted to do it again. Because. Because? She didn’t complete the sentence. Thaddeus stared at her through her breakdown, almost flinching when she almost screamed about it being just a kiss. He reached over, both hands on her shoulders to try to stablise her. He raised a hand, wiping away the tears on her cheek. He hadn’t touched her in ages. He hadn’t hugged her, or kissed her. “Apology accepted. Stop crying.” He said tenderly. “Because you know I have no idea what to do with a blubbering girl.” Thad told her.
“But like I said earlier, forgiving you is another issue altogether.” Thad said, letting go of her and taking a step back. His heart was heavy, and he wished he could forgive her. He’d seen friends do this. Saying they forgave someone, but never truly doing so. In getting back together, the relationship only broke down more. In arguments, that particular incident where the partner supposedly forgave them was brought up. He wanted nothing more than to be with Skylar again. But if he was going to do so, he wanted to be sure. Sure that she wouldn’t do this again. How? Humans were so unpredictable. What more teenagers with their hormones? “So this will be goodbye. Unless you want to complete that sentence you couldn’t and say something more.” Thad spoke, looking at her expectantly.

The feeling of his hands on her shoulders was monumental. Maybe her body was just unnaturally cold, as she was a very bony, lanky girl with no curves and terrible circulation, but his hands had unnatural warmth that resonated with her. She was hypersensitive to their touch. She knew it all too well. Her sobs slowed at his command, small, intense inhales and hiccups left in their midst. She could feel the aggravating tears dripping down her cheeks and off of her chin, but her horribly messy outward appearance was the last thing on her mind. If she had been thinking about it, though, she surely would have worried about it. No one was immune to the embarrassment of crying in the middle of a public hallway. Thankfully, it was empty.
She found hope in the silence between his words, thinking that something wonderful was about to happen. His hands were on her shoulders, and she lifted her right arm upwards so that her small hand rested on his strong one. Her gaze pierced his, and all breathing stopped. She was frozen, and had no control. Everything was in his hands, and she felt her hope crashing down about her ears, shoulders, and to the ground as he let go of her and stepped backwards. Her heart and her mind dropped, and surely her stomach did too. She wasn’t prepared for this. She wasn’t prepared for any of thing, really. She was emotionally out of control and had absolutely no idea what to expect or how to collect herself. All she could think about was the devastation, and then what she needed to do to get him back.
“Thad…no,” she whispered, making an attempt to grab his hand with the one she’d rested on it before he removed it. He was already talking about goodbyes, and that idea was even worse than him yelling at her. His calm and cool exterior was more painful than anything intense. She almost wished that he would scream at her, cause a scene. She certainly deserved that sort of treatment. His polite words were cutting into her with each syllable.
She was faced with a choice, and she didn’t take the time to think it through, because when had Skylar thought anything through? She didn’t think about the context of the words, that neither of them had said to the other before. How silly they could sound when cropped by these horrible circumstances. How forced, how desperate they could seem. It was a tragedy, really, because they were forced. Well, the need to say them was, but she really, truly meant it. Had this all not happened, she probably would have waited until the opportune moment, sometime special that they would both remember. Well, they certainly would both remember this.
“I love you! I love you, Thad. I love you.” She took a step towards him, a steady stream of tears making their way out of her eyes and down her face as she repeated the words with urgency and speed, reaching for his hand again with hers.

Thaddeus sighed quietly when Skylar tried to take a hold of his hand. How many times did he have to tell her goodbye? Wasn't it enough to tell it to her once? From the way she was behaving, the tears on her cheeks and how she looked at him, Thad could tell that she wasn't ready or willing to let go of him. Neither was he. But he couldn't find it in himself to forgive her. Not yet. And her completing the statement that she couldn't earlier did not help.
He found himself glued to the spot. Thad never thought he'd hear her say that, certainly not right now at this very moment where he wasn't even completely sure if he wanted to be with her. He brushed away her outreached hand with just enough force, before shaking his head. “No.” He muttered. “You don't get to say that. You don't get to say it now, when we're not even together. You don't get to say it after you kissed someone else. It doesn't change anything!” Thaddeus said, voice raising in volume until he finally snapped at her.
“Was I not enough for you? Why did you have to go and kiss him? I might have been able to forgive a kiss. I would have to try very very hard and become an extremely jealous and protective boyfriend. But yes, I might have forgiven you. But you stayed with him, Skylar. I'm sure you shared many other kisses during those few months, right? You love me? Well, I was on my way to falling in love with you until you threw everything back in my face.” Thaddeus said, taking a deep breath after his words to calm himself down. His tone wasn't one of pleasantness. It was biting and harsh and he had gotten himself all worked up over her, something he had told himself not to do.
